Usually when it comes to sending SMS for a web project we would recommend utilizing a third party SMS API service, however a recent project required us to send SMS messages via a server (in this case a Raspberry Pi) with an attached Huawei GSM modem.
In this case we decided to use Gammu SMSD and create a simple web API with Lumen - the PHP micro-framework by Laravel to create the Gammu database tables and handle the incoming requests. Originally we only needed to send but we also decided to add endpoints for all of the Gammu tables so you can view the inbox and modem status too.
We have made the Lumen API public for those that need to use an internal SMS server for cost or security reasons and you can find it over at Github here.
